City Council OKs Emergency Repair to Water Reservoir Motor

The Chickasha City Council approves emergency repairs on a motor for a pump at the Ft. Cobb reservoir. It's a critical piece of equipment that sends water from the reservoir into the pipeline for delivery to Chickasha. City administrators had already put the emergency plan in motion after the motor malfunctioned earlier this month. Officials had contacted Evan Enterprises out of Norman to make the repairs. On selecting that company, city manager John Noblitt told the council –

The cost of the repairs is about $35,000 while the cost of a new pump was estimated at $50,000 to $100,000. Officials are using a back-up motor right now but because it’s a larger motor, its only running at about 20 percent capacity so it won't damage the water lines. It will still take about a month before the first motor can be repaired and installed. Noblitt is not expecting any problems with Chickasha getting the water in needs.

Police, Fire Union Contracts Tabled

There was no action taken regarding new contracts for the police or fire unions. After a more than 45-minute closed door session, the council took no action on approving the collective bargaining agreements for the 2019 fiscal year with either group. The council also denied a tort claim from a resident who claims her car was damaged while trying to turn onto a narrow street at a busy intersection. Beverly Johnson is seeking about $1,200 in repair and wrecker costs while trying to turn at 4th and Grand. Specifically, Johnson said the corner is a safety issue, especially with semis going northbound on 4th Street and trying to turn east onto Grand Avenue, which is just one lane. She also believes it’s a liability issue for the city.

School Board Set to Vote on Union Deals

The Chickasha Board of Education has a lengthy agenda for its meeting tonight. Normally, the board meets the second Tuesday of the month but this month's meeting was postponed a week.  The panel is expected to approve contracts for the Chickasha United Teaching Association and the Chickasha Association of Support Employees. The panel will also decide on naming the bus lane on the high school campus as Homer Hulme Lane, and will consider naming the weight room in honor of Sam Rayburn, former CHS football player who played in the NFL for five years, and is now an assistant coach for high school football team.

Chamber Prepares for Fall Festival

Members of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce are preparing for the chamber's annual fall festival. The group will celebrate many of its accomplishments to date in 2018, preview what's to come to close out the year, and some plans for 2019. A number of corporate sponsorships are making the evening possible, and there are a few table sponsorships and individual tickets available as well. The local band Dollar 98 will perform. The fall festival is next Thursday, Sept. 27th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grady County Fairgrounds. Contact the chamber for tickets and sponsorship information.

Emergency Repairs Needed on Ft. Cobb Reservoir Pump

Thousands of dollars in emergency repairs are needed for a pump that sends water from the Ft. Cobb reservoir to Chickasha. The Chickasha City Council will be asked to declare an emergency and waive competitive bidding to get the repairs done as soon as possible. In background information given to city council members, the public works department says the primary motor at Ft. Cobb stopped running at low speed on Sept. 8th. It was determined that it could run at high speed, but the power could damage water lines and/or the motor could stop running completely. The motor was sent to a contractor and repairs were estimated at $35,000 - while replacing the motor could cost between $50,000 to $100,000. City administrators say bidding out the repairs could cost valuable time that the city may not have. If approved, it will still take up to three weeks before the motor can be repaired and re-installed.

Police, Fire Union Contracts May be Approved

The council is also to go behind closed doors to discuss contract negotiations with both the Fraternal Order of Police, Local 129 and the International Association of Firefighters, Local 2041 and possibly approve the collective bargaining agreements for both unions. The council is also to consider approving the payment of retirement funds to former employee Juliana Buckmaster.  The council meets at 6:30 p.m. tonight at city hall.
